Work in progress – hoopoe mobile

Image

These are the cutest little birds in the world.  I once watched a pair of these pecking away in the grass, doing their own thing.  Suddenly one looked up and saw the other had moved a little bit far away.  He chirped, she chirped, and they ran towards each other like long lost lovers.  They are strictly monogamous, but only during mating season, after which it’s game on.

The image of hoopoes in mythology is a bit schizophrenic, they were sacred in ancient Egypt, but thought of as thieves in Scandinavia.  In Estonia they’re considered like owls here in South Africa.  If you see one, someone’s gonna die.

… and in case you were wondering, no, they’re not kosher.
